Hagen Verleger is a graphic designer, reÂsearcher, lecturer, and artist based in Berlin.
He studied for a BA and MA in ComÂmuÂniÂcaÂtion Design in Kiel, Leipzig, and MaasÂtricht (with ↗ Klaus Detjen, Annette le Fort, André Heers, and ↗ Günter Karl Bose), and is curÂrentÂly working towards a PhD in Media Studies at the UniÂverÂsity of Fine Arts and Design in Kiel (supervised by ↗ Petra Maria Meyer).
An award-winning ↗ graphic designer with 15+ years of proÂfessional experience, Verleger primarily works as a typoÂgraphÂer and book designer for and with artists, cultural and educational institutions, and publishers.
As a doctoral candidate, his ↗ research in Media Studies and Design History focuses on mateÂriÂally embedded ideÂoloÂgies and the relationship between book deÂsign and postÂstrucÂturalÂist conÂcepts of language, writing, text, and authorÂship.
Since 2016, he has ↗ taught theÂoÂretÂiÂcal seminars (on critÂiÂcal and messy graphic design hisÂtoÂries, among other topics) and pracÂtiÂcal deÂsign workÂshops and given lectures at art acadeÂmies and uniÂverÂsiÂties in GerÂmany, the NetherÂÂlands, the UK, and the US.
Verleger also maintains an ↗ artistic practice, exploring themes of memÂoÂry and the arÂchive. His artist’s books and spaÂtial installations/interÂventions have featured in group exhibiÂtions internationally, and in 2023 Kunstraum MünÂchen presented his first solo show.
