Hagen Verleger is a graphic designer, researcher, lecturer, and artist based in Berlin.
He studied for a BA and MA in Communication Design in Kiel, Leipzig, and Maastricht (with ↗ Klaus Detjen, Annette le Fort, André Heers, and ↗ Günter Karl Bose), and is currently working towards a PhD in Media Studies at the University of Fine Arts and Design in Kiel (supervised by ↗ Petra Maria Meyer).
An award-winning ↗ graphic designer with 15+ years of professional experience, Verleger primarily works as a typographer and book designer for and with artists, cultural and educational institutions, and publishers.
As a doctoral candidate, his ↗ research in Media Studies and Design History focuses on materially embedded ideologies and the relationship between book design and poststructuralist concepts of language, writing, text, and authorship.
Since 2016, he has ↗ taught theoretical seminars (on critical and messy graphic design histories, among other topics) and practical design workshops and given lectures at art academies and universities in Germany, the Netherlands, the UK, and the US.
Verleger also maintains an ↗ artistic practice, exploring themes of memory and the archive. His artist’s books and spatial installations/interventions have featured in group exhibitions internationally, and in 2023 Kunstraum München presented his first solo show.
