My name is Hagen Verleger, I am a Berlin-based graphic designer, editor, researcher, and lecturer working mainly with artists, cultural and educational institutions, and publishing houses. My emphasis is on editorial design, typography, and book design. I am available for freelance design work as well as artistic collaborations. Feel free to get in touch.
I studied Communication Design focusing on typography and book design at Muthesius Kunsthochschule Kiel with Klaus Detjen, Annette le Fort, André Heers, and Petra Maria Meyer; and at Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig with Günter Karl Bose.
In addition to commissioned work, my personal design and research work, which often revolves around the practice and theory of editing and publishing, is informed by a strong interest in the interrelation of fiction and reality. I am exploring themes such as power structures within institutions, collective models of authorship, and materially embedded ideologies. In 2017/2018, I was artist-in-residence at Dutch postgraduate institute Van Eyck. In 2020, I was research fellow at Deutsches Literaturarchiv Marbach and Kulturstiftung Schloss Wiepersdorf.
I am currently teaching graduate students at Muthesius Academy of Fine Arts and Design and at Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts, and I have given lectures, seminars, and workshops at the following institutions: Cranbrook Academy of Art, Haus der Kulturen der Welt, London College of Communication, Maastricht Academy of Fine Arts and Design, Jan van Eyck Academie, Montclair State University, Munich Academy of Fine Arts, Potsdam University of Applied Sciences, Pratt Institute School of Design, Staatsbibliothek Berlin, Type Directors Club New York, University of Cologne.
